Headmaster’s ban on ‘Meet me at Mcdonald’s’ hairstyle

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

A SCHOOL has banned pupils from sporting an 80s-inspired haircut dubbed “Meet me at Mcdonald’s”.

The trendy style – a frizzy, brushedforward perm, with shaved sides – is sweeping the nation’s teenagers.

But it has gone down badly with one tough headteacher – who is threatening to send pupils home. Barry Smith has outlawed seven types of hairstyles for boys at the school, with the Meet me at Mcdonald’s top of his list.

How the style got its name is unclear but in a letter to parents, Mr Smith labelled the fashion for unkempt hair, with shaved sides “unacceptable”.

And he warned any boys turning up for classes at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy, in Norfolk, with the haircut will be sent home or taught in isolation.

Examples of unacceptable haircuts were put up on boards around the school. The notices include “variations on the style often known as Meet me at Mcdonald’s” and “noticeably longer tops that are not layered in”.

Others are “high top styles of excessive height” and “overgrown, heavy fringes brushed forward on to the face”.

In the letter, Mr Smith wrote: “Most pupils dress appropriately and most have hairstyles that are not extreme. We expect all pupils to meet this standard.” Furious mum Karen Leeder posted the school letter on social media and branded it “absolutely ridiculous”.

Sophia Soares added: “I think it is all getting silly now, a hairstyle does not affect a child’s learning.”

Mr Smith joined the school last September, after it got some of the worst GCSE results in England and Wales.
