ON THIS DAY 62 YEARS AGO (1956)

We told how British Governor of Cyprus, Field Marshal Sir John Harding, ordered the deportatio­n of Greek Cypriot leader, Archbishop Makarios. Makarios later became the first president of an independen­t Cyprus in 1960.

59 YEARS AGO (1959)

Thousands of Tibetans staged an armed uprising in the capital Lhasa against Chinese rule. Crowds gathered at the Dalai Lama’s palace after rumours of Chinese plans to abduct him. He fled on March 31.

49 YEARS AGO (1969)

Martin Luther King’s killer James Earl Ray was jailed for 99 years after he pleaded guilty to the murder so he could avoid the death penalty. Three days later he recanted, saying he had been set up, and demanded a retrial. He died in jail in 1998.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, is 54. He will inherit the title Duke of Edinburgh. Singer Robin Thicke is 41. His parents co-wrote the theme tune for US TV show Diff’rent Strokes. Singer Emeli Sande is 31. She has a degree in neuroscien­ce.
