Big tech firms too powerful says net guru
A SMALL group of major tech firms have too much control of the web, its founder is warning.
Sir Tim Berners-lee says this has led to the internet stoking social tensions, spreading fake news and interfering in elections.
He said big tech firms block competitors and maximise profit ahead of increasing social good.
In a letter marking the web’s 29th anniversary he wrote a handful of platforms control which ideas and opinions are seen.
He called for a new legal framework to make tech firms more responsible.
The British scientist added: “I want the web to reflect our hopes and fulfil our dreams, rather than magnify our fears and deepen our divisions.”
