Little black dress creator Givenchy dies

- BY BRIAN LOVE

FASHION designer Hubert de Givenchy, who designed Audrey Hepburn’s iconic little black dress, has died at the age of 91.

The son of an aristocratic French family, who wanted him to be a lawyer, Givenchy moved to Paris at 17 to study design.

His first collection, at 24, made his young fashion house a major player.

He was hailed for his elegant, balloon-sleeved blouses and calf-length trousers with flared hems.

The 6ft 5in designer, who also dressed Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly, created the LBD Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Yesterday his label’s artistic director, Clare Waight Keller, said: “He was one of the chic-est, most charming men I have ever met.”
