MURDERER

1,000. Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said yesterday: “The scale of the abuse in Telford is deeply shocking and those responsible must be held accountable for any failings. Barnardo’s would support a public inquiry.”

On plans to quiz Chief Con Bailey, Ms Cooper said: “We will be asking questions on this when we take evidence from the National Police Chiefs’ Council on what the police are doing to investigate these cases.

“We need action from the police in Telford now to pursue every lead and every perpetrator.”

Joining calls for a full public inquiry, Labour’s John Mann said: “We are failing young working-class communities and the patterns of grooming are clear to see.”

Martin Evans, Assistant Chief Con for West Mercia Police, said the force is “committed to continuing its focus of tackling this type of offending”.

A spokesman for Telford and Wrekin Council added: “Telford will be covered by the national review by Alexis Jay, who led the Rotherham inquiry.

“We welcome this review coming to Telford. We will welcome sharing what we have learned.”
