Action packed with laughter...

- IANHYLAND

When ITV2’S new James Bond spoof Action Team began last week with the lead character’s todger falling out of his trousers I was worried it might be a sign of things to come.

Luckily, it would appear that unsubtle and unsavoury image was just their way of capturing the attention of an audience more used to a diet of Love Island, Celebrity Juice and endless repeats of

Knocked Up.

Action Team is a definite grower – which shouldn’t be a surprise given it comes from the team behind TV’S best comedy in years, BBC3’S Murder In Successville. That said, it was initially hard to accept Tom Davis, left, playing anyone other than Successville’s DI Sleet. By the end of the second episode I was enjoying his unlikely MI6 agent Logan Mann almost as much as I was enjoying his other character – Mann’s evil criminal nemesis, Vladimir Schevchenko.

Action Team won’t be to everyone’s taste, but if you’re a fan of Austin Powers and/or Bond and have watched a fair few episodes of Ultimate Force or Spooks you’ll probably appreciate the effort they’ve put in.

It’s relentlessly daft and utterly random and thinks nothing of taking a respected actor such as Stephen Graham and asking him to dress up as a vaping clown assassin.

Graham wasn’t the only one to take the bait. Line of Duty’s Vicky Mcclure, The Last Post’s Stephen Campbell Moore, The Missing’s driller killer Derek Riddell and Mr Selfridge’s Amy Beth Hayes have all cropped up so far.

Sometimes serious actors doing comedy can backfire terribly.

Here it works a treat.
