Students in dark about fees
ALMOST one in five university applicants have no idea how much student loan they will need to take out to cover tuition fees.
And a Department for Education study found 13% of first year students did not know the tuition loan they had taken out.
Fees are £9,250 a year for most courses and a quarter of students said they almost did not go to university because of debt worries. But 75% still thought university was a worthwhile investment.
The report said: “The most important factors were the desires to be more employable and achieve the qualification.”
Nick Hillman, of the Higher Education Policy Institute, said there was “a lot of naivety” about student loans, with youngsters unaware interest could be 6.1%.
