Pair’s blame game a ploy to escape facing justice
THE two murderers were captured every step of the way by police as they killed again – then tried to blame each other. Cops believe the feud played out between Stephen Unwin and John Mcfall in court was a ruse to try and evade justice. The court was shown a letter sent from Mcfall to Unwin in prison on October 2 last year. On the top is written: “Destroy once you have read bro. We have got one hell of a fight in this case. “More than 3,000 texts, photos and videos taken off my phone. All damning. “Spent last week going through a law book. With a bit of luck I’ve found a legal loophole. “The CPS are going to crucify us if we don’t use our ace card.” The letter was intercepted by
authorities, and used in the case against Mcfall.
Mobile phone footage showed Mcfall handling a black firearm, which he briefly points at his own head, while the Pink Floyd track Wish You Were Here is played in the background.
On camera, he says: “This is what you want. One of these f***ers.”
A firing gun had possibly been used in the sex attack on Anna shortly before she died.
The “psychopathic” duo forced her to hand over PIN numbers to her bank cards, which they stole.
Prosecutor Jamie Hill said: “The motive was a combination of violent, warped sexual fantasy and greed.”
In another piece of phone footage, they laugh and joke as Unwin tells a friend they are making “10 grand a week”.
The postmortem suggested she was still alive when the car was set alight.
Anna, described as a loving mum but “innocent and naive”, met Unwin when he did maintenance work on properties which she let, which were being used to grow cannabis.
There was no suggestion she was involved in any criminality.
