48 YEARS AGO (1970)

An oxygen tank exploded on board the Apollo 13 spacecraft, putting the lives of astronauts Captain James Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise in peril. They returned safely to Earth three days later.

4 YEARS AGO (2014)

Some 276 school girls were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria, by members of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram. 112 are still missing.

Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi is 60. His parents owned an ice-cream business. And many happy returns to Mirror reader Maisie Jones, from Chelsfield, Kent, who turns 18 today.
