Hugh’s huge battle

BRITAIN’S FAT FIGHT WITH HUGH FEARNLEYWHITTINGSTALL

-

BBC1, 9pm TV chef Hugh Fearnley-whittingstall has been fighting the nation’s obesity crisis, and it seems to be having an effect.

Having turned up at Nestle’s offices with a traffic light and a megaphone complaining about unclear cereal packaging, the next thing we know, the company announces it will introduce colour-coded labelling on its UK products.

Just last week, Hugh and Jamie Oliver were appealing to the Commons with evidence on obesity (more on that in tonight’s episode).

And on a more personal level, even Hugh looked a lot leaner than he did when filming started a year ago.

This series has been informative, educating and highly entertaining as Hugh has skipped around the country pulling some brilliant stunts and shouting about chocolate-laden checkouts, highsugar juice and the trickery of marketing.

Tonight, Hugh investigates the amount of marketing for junk food, compared to vegetables – a recent study showed children see up to 12 adverts an hour for junk food. Hugh whips up some healthy adverts and puts them up in schools and shops.

He also learns that there are some simple changes that could be made to GPS’ surgeries to help prevent obesity-related diseases, like putting scales in waiting rooms.

He also heads to the Tory Party conference but struggles to get an audience with Jeremy Hunt.

And at the end of the year-long mission to put a city on a diet, Hugh meets up with some of the dieters on Newcastle Can – but has the city’s 100,000lb target been reached?
