We announced that Winston Churchill had become war

Prime Minister after Neville Chamberlai­n quit. He lost a vote of no confidence following the British withdrawal from Norway and the fall of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg to the Nazis.

55 YEARS AGO (1963)

Brit Greville Wynne was jailed for eight years, including five years’ hard labour, on spying charges in Russia. His Russian co-accused, Oleg Penkovsky, was executed by firing squad.

33 YEARS AGO (1985)

A fire at Bradford City’s Valley Parade stadium during a Third Division match against Lincoln City killed 65 and hurt more than 260. The blaze began in a wooden stand earmarked for demolition. It led to new safety standards in football grounds, including the banning of wooden stands.
