At the end of the Bridge

THE BRIDGE BBC2, 9pm

-

SCANDI-NOIR has become part of our vocabulary over the last few years – and that’s all down to shows such as The Bridge, which has hooked us in for three gripping series.

But all good things must come to an end, and tonight’s fourth run (moved over from BBC4 for the first time) will be the last.

In fact, just to absolutely dash any hopes for an 11th hour reprieve, one of the producers told a Danish newspaper last year: “Without giving away the plot, it does not allow for further continuation.”

Creative producer Anders Landstrom said: “It is obviously very sad to say goodbye to Saga after four incredible seasons, but our talented writers have an extraordinary end in store for viewers.”

It’s certainly a shocking and compelling start to the Swedishdanish series.

In the darkness, underneath the Oresund Bridge, a woman is buried up to her shoulders and is screaming, albeit muffled through gaffer tape.

Later, police on the scene find that someone has stoned her to death – and it took up to 100 blows before she died. I told you it was brutal.

The victim is the head of the Danish Immigration Board, a woman who was mired in a deportation scandal that would attract many suspects.

Henrik Sabroe (Thure Lindhardt) must investigate, but with a new partner as Saga (Sofia Helin) languishes in prison accused of murdering her mother.

With Henrik missing Saga terribly and Saga having a hard time in jail, we’re all off-balance as this latest case begins.
