36 YEARS AGO (1982)

Our front page reported a massive Argentine air attack had badly damaged a Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer. The vessel, later revealed to be HMS Coventry, went down with the loss of 19 sailors.

78 YEARS AGO (1940)

The siege of Calais by the Germans ended with the surrender of the British and French garrison. Some 20,000 allied troops were taken prisoner.

95 YEARS AGO (1923)

The first Le Mans 24 Hours car race was held near the town of Le Mans in northern France. The “Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency” has been held annually ever since with the exception of a 10-year break from 1939 during the Second World War.
