Pair jailed for fatal homeless man attack

-

THE security guard and her husband who killed a homeless man after diverting CCTV away from the area have been jailed for 15 years between them.

A court heard Sarah Finnie, 36, was upset at comments Tony Richardson made about her after he was thrown out of the shopping centre where she worked.

High Court judge Mr Justice Goss told jurors Marc Finnie was “incensed” and attacked Mr Richardson at his wife’s request. He walked purposefully into Grimsby town centre, where the victim was sat begging in his sleeping bag outside a bank.

The jury heard Finnie, 44, kneed and twice punched Mr Richardson to the head “out of anger and frustration”.

His wife arranged for the cameras to be focused elsewhere.

Mr Richardson, 45, known as Tosh, suffered a fractured jaw and fell unconscious in the January 15 assault. He died in hospital from internal injuries the next day.

The Finnies were cleared of murder at Sheffield crown court but convicted of manslaughter.

Marc was sentenced to eight years’ jail, Sarah to seven years. In a statement read to the court, Mr Richardson’s mum Lynne Walker said it was the “worst thing on earth” for a parent to bury a child.

On behalf of the victim’s family, DCI Stewart Miller said: “Tony did not lead a blame-free life, but he was a good person at heart.

“He suffered with drug and alcohol addiction. He could, on occasion, be verbally abusive but he was not an aggressive man.

“Tony was a well-known figure with a wide circle of friends. He did not deserve to be killed for what he said in an argument.

“He was well-loved by his mum and his family, who all miss him.”
