You’d be crazy to miss out on Invincible in Sandy Lane

-

INVINCIBLE ARMY can march to victory in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes (3.25) at Haydock this afternoon.

The James Tate-trained colt showed smart form as a juvenile, winning twice and twice finishing second in Group 2 company.

Those defeats came at the hands of rivals Sands Of Mali (Gimcrack Stakes, York) and James Garfield (Mill Reef Stakes, Newbury).

But my selection put up an improved effort on his return to the fray when justifying 11-8 favouritism in the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes at

Ascot, and is taken to exact revenge on those two rivals to book his place in Royal Ascot’s Group 1 Commonwealth Cup.

The Silver Bowl Handicap (2.50) is wide open, but looks sure to give a good account of himself.

Frankie Dettori’s mount is on an upward curve – since a debut second at Newmarket last October, he is unbeaten in three visits to the track.

Qaysar’s most recent success came in a seven-furlong handicap at Newbury last month and the step up to a mile here should help him overcome an 8lb rise in the weights.

After a troubled run when fifth in the Chester Cup consolation – the Ian Williams-saddled stablemate Magic Circle won the big one –

has plenty going for him in the two-mile handicap (2.15). At Goodwood, ridden by Sardinian-born jockey Gabriele Malune, has more to offer at 2.30.

After 206 days off the track – and a gelding operation – Eve Johnson Houghton’s three-year-old made all in a mile handicap at Chepstow and a 10lb rise may not be enough to prevent him following up.

Earlier on the Sussex Downs,

and another Sardinian, Andrea Atzeni (above), look the pair to concentrate on in the Listed Netbet Festival Stakes (1.55).

At York, is a worthy favourite for the Group 3 Bronte Cup Fillies’ Stakes (3.05), while gets the nod at 3.40.
