The Battle of Belgium ended as King Leopold III surrendered to the Nazis. More than 6,000 Belgian troops died in the fighting and 200,000 were taken prisoner.

The Exhibition of Industrial Power in Glasgow was opened by Princess Elizabeth. The event was part of the Festival of Britain and showcased British inventiveness as well as focusing on the new technology of the day.
