Smith’s a carer looking for help

-

SHERIDAN Smith has teamed up with writer Jimmy Mcgovern to star in new BBC1 drama Care.

Bafta-winner Sheridan, 36, plays Jenny, raising two girls alone after the departure of husband Dave.

Her one lifeline is her widowed mum Mary, played by Alison Steadman, 71, whose help with childcare allows Jenny to hold down her full-time job at a supermarket.

When Mary suffers a stroke and develops dementia, Jenny’s world comes crashing down. Everything changes for her and sister Claire, played by Sinead Keenan, 40.

The pair are faced with a fight to get the care their mother deserves.

The 90-minute drama looks sure to be a hit. Jimmy Mcgovern said: “A great cast, a wonderful director and a superb co-writer. I’m really looking forward to making this.”

Co-writer Gillian Juckes says: “It has been a great experience working with Jimmy and a wonderful oppor- tunity to write about a subject very close to my heart.”

All three stars have an association with Liverpool, where Care is being filmed. Sheridan was the lead in hit drama Cilla, Sinead starred in Little Boy Blue and Alison is from the city.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: “It is truly remarkable story of one woman’s battle to get the best care for her mother. The cast portray this poignant story with the warmth and gravitas it deserves.”
