Corrie’s gone flat on laughs

-

Coronation Street is no doubt still celebrating after scooping six gongs at last weekend’s British Soap Awards.

Fair play, but I’m more bothered about one of the ones that got away.

For the first time since 2009, Corrie failed to win the Best Comedy Performance award.

Just a blip? Or confirmation that the funniest soap in TV history just isn’t that funny anymore?

I’m afraid last night’s episodes won’t have inspired much optimism.

To be fair, the drugs sting storyline with Rosie, right,

Gemma and some unconvincing gangsters did raise a few chuckles.

Sadly that was mainly down to the awful acting and slapstick.

Arriving so soon after the bloody events of last week it was like going from Tarantino to panto in the blink of an eye.

I’d hoped there’d be laughs in Gail falling victim to the con artist psychic.

Even that fell flat, mainly because I felt a bit sorry for Gail when she told Roy that Richard Hillman’s curse, “makes a lot more sense than most of the things in this world”.

The worst thing is I’m told the helpline for people who’ve been the victims of dodgy psychics is useless.

It puts you on hold and you’re left going: “Is there anybody there?”
