Aidan and Donnacha at double

- BY PETER O’HEHIR

GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI, winner of his maiden in Navan on Saturday, landed the listed King George V Cup in Leopardstown last night, completing a double for Aidan and Donnacha O’brien.

The Galileo colt took command early in the straight and stayed on strongly to repel the challenge of Cimeara by two and a half lengths.

“He’s a progressive horse, still a bit awkward and babyish, but with plenty of ability,” said Donnacha. “I liked him last year but he has taken time this season. And he’s still learning.”

Bond Street had initiated the Ballydoyle double when justifying 10/11 favouritism in the earlier rated race.

Jim Bolger’s Zorion, strongly ridden by Kevin manning, bagged the other listed event on the card, the Glencairn Stakes, getting the better of a duel with Allegio by a head.

The winning trainer admitted he “got it wrong’ when running the Smart Strike colt over six furlongs at the Curragh last time.

Meanwhile, tonight’s action is in the Curragh and Clonmel. And the featured, Group 3 TRM Ballyogan Stakes looks set for export, with the William Haggastrained One Master expected to land the spoils under James Doyle.

Winner of a listed event at Ascot last autumn, this Fastnet Rock filly was “a bit fresh”, according to her trainer, when forth to Tomyris in a Group 3 at Lingfield on her seasonal debut, with compatriot Hikmaa sixth.

Reportedly “better and more focused”, One Master is the highest-rated filly in the field and sets the standard,

Blue Uluru, impressive in Navan last time, might defy a 7lb rise in the five-furlong TRM Equestrian Superstore Handicap while Highland Reel’s brother Cape Of Good Hope is expected to step-up on his debut run behind Bold Approach at Leopardstown to land the opening two-year-old maiden.
