Jones-bishop double leaves Wigan on their knees

TWO tries from Wakefield’s Ben Jonesbishop completed a nightmare week for Wigan and made it three defeats in a row.

Five days after video footage of Joel and Sam Tomkins (right) emerged that resulted in both being fined and Joel banned, the Warriors produced another disappointment on the field.

It is now three straight losses since coach Shaun Wane announced he will be leaving at the end of the season, including a Challenge Cup exit at Warrington.

Wigan did at least end a three-hour drought without scoring a point – but they were a clear second-best against a Trinity side looking more like last year’s top-four challengers.

Wakefield prop David Fifita provided a rare pre-match shift in focus away from the Tomkins controversy when he highlighted the “grubbiness” of Warriors forwards Tony Clubb and Ben Flower, with the latter not playing.

And Fifita had the last laugh on the pitch with a towering display as Chris Chester’s men moved up to sixth place.

Winger Jones-bishop touched down in either half, including an opening try from a smart Max Jowitt pass.

Wigan had Tommy Leuluai sin-binned for an off-the-ball tackle and by the time he returned, his side were 14-0 behind after Bill Tupou (above) touched down.

Gabe Hamlin crashed over for his first try for the visitors to close the gap to eight points at the break. But hopes of a comeback were all but extinguished when Jonesbishop picked off a Sean O’loughlin pass and raced 90 metres shortly after the restart.

Tom Johnstone provided a superb finish from a Willie Isa error to make it 26-6 and although Tom Davies and Morgan Escare responded, Pauli Pauli had the final say for dominant Wakefield.
