We reported on the MPS’ debate about the case of Timothy Evans, hanged in 1950 for his baby daughter’s murder. It was later discovered his wife and child were among serial killer John Christie’s victims.

55 YEARS AGO (1963)

Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space. The ex-textile worker was chosen to pilot Russia’s Vostok 6 from over 400 applicants, completing 49 orbits of Earth.

42 YEARS AGO (1976)

An uprising in the black township of Soweto, Johannesbu­rg, left 176 dead. South African police opened fire with automatic rifles on a protest by 20,000 unarmed school pupils against the introducti­on of Afrikaans as the official language in schools. June 16 is now a national holiday in South Africa.
