Born in the wild

THE HIGHLAND MIDWIFE C5, 8pm

WHEN you live in the middle of nowhere, giving birth is an even more difficult challenge.

Problems such as no phone signal, extreme weather conditions or a herd of Highland cattle with massive horns standing in the road are just a few of the scenarios mentioned here.

This compelling series, back for a second run, is basically One Born Every Minute goes rural. Cameras follow hardcore Highland midwives Ruth, Morven and Hazel, as they help mums-tobe living in the far reaches of Scotland.

Sometimes the mums live miles from the nearest hospital. Sometimes it’s snowing.

Sometimes the air ambulance just can’t get to the mum... there’s a lot to manage.

Although it’s all worth it to get “a wee cuddle at the end of it”, says one midwife. So lap up the stunning scenery before the drama starts.

Ruth is looking after first-time mum Carrie Ann who wants a local birth but ends up in the back of a speeding ambulance.

Meanwhile, Morven knows that mum-to-be Sarah has been waiting six long years to have a second baby.

After a traumatic first birth in hospital, Sarah is eager to let her baby be born at home, but 30 hours later and there’s still no sign of the tot.

And elsewhere, military wife Shelley is terrified at the idea of having her third C-section.

With Shelley’s husband away from home, it is down to midwife Hazel to keep an increasingly anxious mum-to-be calm in the days leading up to the birth.
