FAMILY OF MURDERED ROBERT TELL OF AGONY
Man arrested after dad-of-one’s violent death
THE family of murdered man last night spoke of their shock and heartache.
Robert Jones, 30, died in hospital after an incident in Parkmount Street in the Tiger’s Bay area of North Belfast on Thursday.
One man has been arrested in connection with his death.
Mr Jones’ dad William told the Mirror: “I’m just bewildered. The police were here last night at the hospital in a room with my wife and all of the rest of my kids.
“An officer told us that it was a murder investigation. That’s as much as what I know this point.”
Mr Jones, who was dad to fiveyear-old Matilda, grew up in Craigavon, Co Armagh.
Around a year ago moved to a flat in Mountcollyer Avenue, near the scene of the fatal attack.
William added: “He loved his music. He was just a young fella who loved life. He was a great lad. He was only a child.”
His sister Charlene added: “He’s sadly missed. I’m heartbroken. We were really close.”
Neighbours expressed their shock at the incident. One said: “I’ve lived here 52 years.
“It used to be a great community to be a part of but it’s just getting worse.”
Democratic Unionist MP Nigel Dodds added: “It is shocking to hear that a man has died after sustaining injuries on Thursday evening.
“This has caused great shock in this settled and close-knit community off North Queen Street.
“I wish to appeal for full co-operation with the police, in what is now a murder investigation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his man’s family and friends at this time of sudden bereavement.” SDLP MLA Nichola Mallon offered her condolences to Mr Jones family and friends.
She said: “I was shocked and saddened to hear a man was murdered.
“My thoughts and the thoughts of my colleagues are with the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
“I would appeal to anyone who has any information to contact the police or Crimestoppers.”
A police spokesman said that one person has been arrested.
He said: “Detectives from PSNI’S Serious Crime Branch have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 30-year-old male in Parkmount Street, North Belfast last night.
“A 21-yearold male has been arrested. Detectives are appealing for witnesses”
