SERENA: I DON’T WANT IMMUNITY FROM DRUGS TESTS.. I WANT EQUALITY

-

SERENA WILLIAMS claims she is happy to have been drugtested five times since her return from maternity leave – as long as everyone else is treated the same.

The seven-times champion (right) is back at Wimbledon having taken a year out.

But the build-up was overshadowed by her refusing to take a drug test last month because she feels she is being unfairly targeted by doping authorities.

She phoned the head of US Anti-doping Agency, Travis Tygart, to complain even before learning she was tested more than other US player. The 23time Grand Slam winner, who returned to the WTA Tour in March, said: “How is it I’m getting tested five times in June? It’s only June, I’ve been tested five times.

“I’m OK with that as long as everyone is being treated equally. That’s all I care about.

“What I want to know is everyone getting tested, that we’re really working to keep this sport clean.

“It’s all about equality. If that’s testing everyone five times, let’s do it. It’s just about being equal and not centring one person out. Just due to the numbers, it looks like I’m being pushed out. Just test everyone equally.”

US sports website Deadspin revealed last week a USADA drug tester arrived at Williams’ Florida home on June 14 when she was out – and refused to leave. The test was not done.

Williams said: “How can I have a missed test when it’s nowhere near the time I should be there?”
