- BY MARTIN FRICKER

A MAN has been mowed down and killed by two carjackers, who had stolen the vehicle at knifepoint moments earlier.

The hit-and-run victim, 38, was walking home in the early hours yesterday when he was struck by the black Chevrolet Captiva.

Both suspects fled on foot, leaving the pedestrian in the road.

He was taken to hospital but died later from multiple injuries.

Police said the car had been stolen less than a mile from the scene in Earlsdon, Coventry.

Its owner suffered minor injuries when the two men, one armed with a large knife, attacked him.

The pair left the blade in the footwell of the car after knocking down the pedestrian at 12.30am.

Rescue teams including two ambulances and an air ambulance attended. West Midlands Ambulance Service said the victim was treated at the scene and en route to University Hospital Coventry.

A spokesman added: “Unfortunately, shortly after arrival at hospital, it became apparent nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased.”

Det Sgt Alan Hands of West Midlands Police said: “The theft of a car has led to the death of an innocent man.

“We are trawling through CCTV of the area to track the movements of the vehicle and where the two suspects may have escaped to.”
