Battling Boulter off mark

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

KATIE BOULTER showed “heart” and “guts” after fighting back to win her first ever Grand Slam match an hour after blowing her first match point.

The British No.3 served for the match against Veronica Cepede Royg in the second set but dumped a forehand in the net.

She showed great composure to take the decider with a cool drop shot to win 6-4 5-7 6-4.

Boulter said: “I am ecstatic. It is something I have dreamed of my whole life. I am so happy I have been able to achieve one of my goals – to win here.

“It was really difficult having a match point and not getting it. It is about finding a way. I am a great competitor and I showed some guts.

“I just put my heart out there and luckily I got the win. I found a way to win.”

Naomi Broady followed Roger Federer on to Centre Court on Monday to get a taste of the atmosphere but the experience could not help her when she returned there yesterday.

The British No.4 lost 6-2 7-5 to defending champion Garbine Muguruza.

She said: “I did the walk-on just behind Roger just to see where I would be going, because I’ve never been on Centre.

“Just to hear the crowd as Roger went on, it was completely overwhelming. I was really glad I did it, because when I went on I was kind of prepared and ready for it.”

Katy Dunne was another casualty last night when she was beaten 6-3 7-6 by 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko.
