Mum’s anger at warning for ‘flouting’ hosepipe ban

- BY SHAUNA CORR

A MUM has spoken of her shock at getting a hosepipe ban warning on a postcard through the front door.

The mother of five from the Springfield Road in West Belfast, said she received the message yesterday about a “wastage of water” from a paddling pool.

But she insists it was filled before Friday’s ban was announced. The woman added: “I didn’t have a pool up yesterday and any time I do there’s loads of kids at it. I have five kids.

“I just couldn’t believe it to be honest. The older kids were shocked the three younger ones can’t understand it.”

Northern Ireland Water said demand remains at 20% higher than usual, but the situation has improved since then.

A spokesman said: “A loss of supply for households is completely avoidable. However, if people continue to waste water it will become a reality. If everyone restricts unnecessary use of water, there will be plenty for everyone.

“By following the simple guidelines, it will negate the need to enforce the hosepipe ban with penalties. If penalties were to be imposed they can include a fine of up to £1,000. NI Water is receiving reports of hosepipe breaches through our Waterline number and social media channels.”

As for the question of whether they have taken action against anyone, they added: “There is a process to follow before an individual can be fined. Each case will be considered on its own merits and where there is sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegation further action may be taken.

“However, if there is a reoccurrence then consideration will be given to more formal action. However, we fully appreciate the efforts of the public in helping us to conserve water.”
