Allied troops parachuted into Sicily as hundreds of ships sailed from North Africa carrying troops, armoured vehicles and artillery for the planned invasion of Italy.

56 YEARS AGO (1962)

Telstar, the world’s first communicat­ions satellite, was launched by NASA from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The first privately sponsored space launch, it was a joint project between AT&T and Bell in the US, Britain’s GPO and France’s PTT to develop satellite communicat­ions over the Atlantic.
