Death driver ‘used mobile’

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN

A DRIVER who killed the mum of Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman was on his mobile seconds before the crash, a court heard.

Liam Rosney, 32, denies causing the death of Carol Boardman by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

John Philpotts, prosecuting, said: “He was distracted by his mobile.”

Carol, 75, was hit in Connah’s Quay, North Wales. The Mold crown court trial continues. FOUR more boys have been freed from a flooded Thai cave, on day two of a perilous rescue mission.

The footballers were airlifted to hospital yesterday, joining their four teammates who were saved on Sunday.

But the last four Wild Boars players and their coach, 25, spent a 17th night in the cave. Rescuers are set to return today, but it is unclear if crews will be able to get all five out in one day.

Leader of the mission, Narongsak Osoththanakorn, said: “The team is getting used to the operation.

“In the cave, we have more than 100 staff... for guide ropes, to fill tanks, and 18 divers to get the kids.” Major General Chalongchai Chaiyakham said they had “adapted the plan to sharpen it”, adding: “I expect tomorrow will be good news.”

The boys, aged 11-16, had to squeeze through gaps as narrow as 38cm.

All of the latest evacuees were said to be in good health, with at least two reportedly emerging on foot after the six-hour mission. “Imagine marathon runners – it’s like when they reach the finish line, exhausted,” a source said.

But the boys will have to wait before they can hug their families. Mr Osoththanakorn said: “They will be kept away from their parents for a while because we are concerned about infections.”

He said doctors may allow family visits “at a distance or through glass”.

The boys reportedly had blood and urine tests and lung X-rays, to check for potentially fatal bacterial diseases.

Thai Navy Seals wrote on Facebook: “Two days, eight Wild Boars. Hooyah!”

An elite Thai diver died last week during the rescue at the Tham Luang caves in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand.

Ten British specialists are helping in the mission. The boys became trapped on June 23 as the cave flooded.
