Group rescued as car sinks on beach Wind set to bring end to UK scorcher

A STRANDED family was rescued from rocks as the car their daughter was in became submerged in waves.

Three of them were walking their dog, leaving their hire car on the beach with the teenager inside.

But they were caught out by the tide and the girl escaped and called for help.

The emergency services saved the family but could not get to the car in time on Saturday night.

The dramatic rescue came on another scorching weekend, but the hot spell is due to fizzle out amid wind and rain tomorrow.

Dave Furber, beach warden at Brean Down, Somerset, said: “Three people from the car became cut off while walking along the base of the down.

“They’d left their car on the beach with a family member, a teenage daughter, and were apparently unaware that the tide comes in so far.

“She called for help when the tide started to reach the vehicle and she saw the three family members had been cut off on the rocks.” Mr Furber raised the alarm at 7.20pm. The Coastguard, RNLI and BARB Search & Rescue, Burnham, attended. Police and an ambulance were also sent out.

The coastguard made sure the girl was safe and the lifeboat rescued the others.

A coastguard spokesman said: “They’d been out for some time and, with wind blowing in, were becoming a little cold.”

The family, from Hereford, were taken to hospital. The spokesman added: “If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of the person who stayed with the car, this could have been far worse.”

BARB said its crews were unable to attempt a recovery of the car due to the rapidly incoming tide.

Earlier, as sunbathers flocked to beaches including Broadstairs, Kent, a swimmer drowned after getting into difficulties in the sea at Mumbles, near Swansea. The coastguard recovered the man, who has not been named, but he was pronounced dead at hospital.

While a stranded deer drowned in the sea off Southsea Castle, Portsmouth, as passengers on a boat tried to save it.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, which helped retrieve the roe buck but could not revive it, said: “A passing boat tried to aid the rescue and lassoed the deer, unfortunately drowning it.”

Although Northern Ireland saw rain fall all day yesterday, there were highs of 32C in parts of the UK. However, light wind and rain are predicted in most areas from tomorrow.

The Met Office added: “Places across England could see showers. It will still feel hot across the east of England. Generally, we will have light winds and showers.” The cooler weather will start in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
