MAYO GO FOR OAK IN CROKE

- BY MIKE FINNERTY

Mayo 2-14 Derry 2-11 All-ireland U20 semi-final

GOALS from Ryan O’donoghue and Paul Lambert helped propel Mayo into next month’s All-ireland final against Kildare at Croke Park.

The Westerners even had the luxury of O’donoghue missing a penalty as two late points from Tommy Conroy crowned their win in Carrick-on-shannon on Saturday.

Mayo got the ball rolling when skipper O’donoghue hit the net after just 52 seconds.

Derry didn’t blink though, and Callum

Brown cracked in a fine goal after a powerful run in the 10th minute before Oisin Mcwilliams added a second three minutes later.

That left the Oak Leaf boys ahead by 2-2 to 1-2, but they were outscored in the second quarter by 0-5 to 0-1.

Ross Egan landed three frees for the Westerners during that purple patch with man of the match Oisín Mclaughlin and Evan O’brien also on target.

Mike Solan’s side were 1-7 to 2-3 up at the break, but Derry made a burst after the restart and scores from Lorcan Mcwilliams, Ben Mccarron and Mark Mcgrogan saw them lead.

Mayo came roaring back, with Lambert’s (above) goal in the 41st minute tilting the balance, and points from John Gallagher (2) and Oisín Mclaughlin left Derry with too much to do. MAYO scorers: R Egan (0-5f), P Lambert (1-1), R O’donoghue (1-0), T Conroy (0-2), O Mclaughlin (0-2), J Gallagher (0-2), C Diskin (0-1), E O’brien (0-1). DERRY scorers: L Mcwilliams (0-5, 3fs), C Brown (1-0), O Mcwilliams (1-0), B Mccarron (0-2, 1f), D Cassidy (0-1), C Doherty (0-1, ’45), M Mcgrogan (0-1), B Cassidy (0-1).
