GARY: TIME TO BREAK MOLDE
GLENAVON boss Gary Hamilton has told his players they’re just one big result away from “an historic win” in Europe by an Irish League club.
Hamilton hailed Glenavon’s first leg victory the best by a Northern Ireland team in European competition since Linfield’s 3-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League in 1993.
But Hamilton, inset, knows progressing past Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, who lie third in the Norwegian league, would provide one of the biggest shocks of the round.
“Last week’s win was one of the biggest of any
Irish
League side at this level,” he said. “If we managed to go through, it would be one of the proudest moments of my career.
“To beat a team of Molde’s quality over two legs would be unbelievable, but we are under no illusions how strong they are. They’ll still be huge favourites to progress.
“It’ll be a massive task, but we’ve given ourselves a fighting chance. Who know, maybe we can sneak an historic win.”
Glenavon are without Rhys Marshall, who scored the equaliser last week, and goalkeeper Johnny Tuffey.
Sammy Clingan, Andrew Mitchell and James Singleton, who missed last week’s first leg, are also still on the missing list.
“It makes it tougher,” said Hamilton. “But it’s a chance for others.”
