HUNDREDS of foreign criminals who vanished while awaiting deportation are still on the run after eight years.

Among them are paedophiles, rapists and violent thugs classified as “high harm” individuals who pose a serious threat to the public.

Figures obtained by the Daily Mirror show the Home Office has traced only 369 of 760 foreign offenders who absconded after being released from jail in 2010.

This was the first year in which records were kept on numbers of foreign criminals released without being considered for deportation.

Only 22 of the 58 “high harm” offenders were found, leaving 36 still unaccounted for.

The Home Office said: “We will not give up looking for these absconders. The Home Office’s absconder tracing unit work to track down, arrest and return absconders to custody. Measures introduced under the Immigration Act 2016 mean in future all non-detained foreign nationals subject to deportation proceedings or a deportation order will be electronically monitored.” The Home Office’s record has improved since 2010. Figures this year showed 494 crooks vanished while facing removal from the UK from 2014 to March 2016. More than 200 were still on the run. In 2014 a National Audit Office report revealed one in six foreign crooks absconded. At the time, grieving dad Paul Houston blasted the Government’s failure to keep track of them. He had called for the deportation of asylum seeker Aso Mohammed Ibrahim, who killed his daughter Amy, 12, in a hit-and-run at Blackburn, Lancs. Mr Houston said: “The politicians have blood on their hands... families’ lives have been ruined and people have died because of this.”
