DEFOE: I AM COMING FOR YOU, HENRY

- BY ALEX CROOK

JERMAIN DEFOE is on a mission to outgun Thierry Henry as he embarks on his NINETEENTH season in professional football.

Veteran Defoe is the seventh highest top scorer in Premier League history with 162 goals – 13 behind Arsenal icon Henry.

The Bournemouth hot-shot, whose side entertain Cardiff tomorrow, said: “I understand every goal I score from now to the end of my career is moving me up on that list. On a personal note, it’s special.

“I think I’m just one behind Robbie Fowler now.

“Of course, if I could score more goals than someone like Thierry Henry – a World Cup winner, a legend, someone I played against so many times – that would be really special.

“To do something like that would be just crazy.

“The top scorers are all legends of the game, the likes of Wayne Rooney and the main man, Alan Shearer.

“When I was a kid I was obsessed with scoring goals – that’s all I wanted to do and I always thought if I could score one goal in the Premier League it would be special.”

Defoe turns 36 in October but believes he can emulate Ryan Giggs and Teddy Sheringham by playing on into his 40s. He said: “As you get older, I don’t think you’re going to get less goals – nothing changes really. A lot of the time it’s instinctive.”
