Baby born in shopping centre

IT was a case of no time to call the midwife when a woman went into labour at a busy shopping centre on Monday.

Staff at Connswater in East Belfast sprung into action when she started having contractio­ns on the steps of the facility.

Speaking to the Mirror, Josephine said: “The ambulance control was giving instructio­ns and we were told to go and get a shoe lace, pin and towels.

“I was shouting commands to people and she was dilating further, then the rapid response paramedic came and checked her and said we are not going anywhere, the baby is coming.

“I had to get her to push and then she gave birth to a baby boy.

“The nicest thing was the main ambulance came and while they were getting her on a bed I got to nurse the wee one in my arms. My two girls are 30 and 25 now so it’s been a long time since I had a newborn to cuddle, it was lovely.

“I am a townie so it is something I have never experience­d.

“It is unbelievab­le and not something you expect from a Monday. He was like Jesus being born in a manger – well certainly a makeshift bed.”
