UK still driving to EU exit slip-road

-

Thankfully, I am not in a car being driven by senior Labour MP Barry Gardiner.

In his world, we’re on a journey and, no matter what dangers lie ahead, we must continue because we made a decision before we set off and cannot change course now.

With Brexit, we can now see danger ahead but we are not allowed to avoid it because our first action is sacrosanct. What world are our politicians living in when they stop us changing our direction?

If one thing has emerged from the present Brexit debacle, it is that the current batch of politicians most certainly do not know best.

Yet again more shouts from the anti-brexit brigade.

I don’t place all the blame at the door of PM Theresa May, though it’s a problem that she is weak. The problem is European chief negotiator Michel Barnier has from the outset worked to hamper the process as he fears more countries may follow Britain out of the EU. Our democratic vote was to leave the EU and it must remain the decision. We have been and still are Great Britain. If the cost of holidays to

Europe rise, go elsewhere.

Let’s not forget we’re an island. Imports and exports involve sea or air transport. Without freedom of movement between the UK and EU, a five-yearold could predict there will be chaos.

Now our politicians are like rabbits in headlights.

The reality of whether we are in or out matters little to me, but it is of immense importance to my eight grandchildren. I believe the UK should vote whether to accept the deal, and let 16-year-olds have a say. Dr Geoff Richmond, Nottingham

Surely Michel Barnier’s initial remit was to negotiate and find a satisfactory way for us to leave the EU? All he appears to have done is to find reasons to block our proposals, despite all the effort and concessions put forward by us. It must be time now for a change of approach. We should remind him of the UK people’s vote to leave, and, by EU rules, we are leaving on March 29. If we leave without a deal, then that’s how it will have to be and we will have to make the best of it.

But the divorce payment must not be due if there is no deal.

Brexiteers complain 100 MPS are against Theresa May’s Chequers’ plan. They also tell us we must stick to the democratic leave vote, but they undemocratically stand in the way of the PM.

There should be a vote to approve the final Brexit deal.

Terry Marriott Waterlooville, Hants

The Remainers’ ‘project fear’ has not convinced those of us who voted to leave the EU. There are millions of us who do not agree with being ruled by a foreign power in Brussels. Get us out of the EU now.
