DYLAN SAVES THE BLUSHES Glens squeeze past Larne as Glenavon crash out

- BY DARREN FULLERTON

GLENTORAN dodged a bullet on a night when Glenavon were shot down by Dergview in the second round of the Betmclean League Cup.

The Glens required extratime to beat Championship outfit Larne at The Oval as Gary Hamilton’s Lurgan Blues fell at the first hurdle of the competition for senior clubs.

Dergview stunned the Danske Bank Premiership club 1-0 at Mourneview Park thanks to a first half headed goal from Matthew Callaghan.

Larne almost followed suit at The Oval, but Glentoran held firm to win it late on through raiding winger Dylan Davidson.

The visitors had taken the lead midway through the opening period when David Scullion rounded off a swift counter to tee up Darren Stuart at the back post.

Ronnie Mcfall’s men, who had seen an early Marcus Kane header scrambled off the line, levelled through Robbie Mcdaid just before the break.

And they took the lead in the 56th minute when Kane directed a clinical header past Conor Devlin in the Larne goal.

The Invermen were level on 70 minutes when centre back Chris Ramsey reacted to force the ball home from a half cleared corner.

With the tie headed for penalties in extra-time, Davidson won it for the Glens when he slid in at the back pot to sweep the ball into the net.

Cup holders Dungannon also required extra-time to overcome Limavady 2-1, a Paul Mcelroy strike and own goal seeing Rodney Mcaree’s through to the last-16.

Crusaders survived a scare when they came back from a goal down to beat PSNI 4-1, while Andy Waterworth bagged FIVE as Linfield thrashed Moyola Park 8-0 at Windsor Park.

Cliftonville beat Distillery 5-1 helped by a Joe Gormley brace and Ballymena United eased into the next round with a 5-1 win over Dollingston, Cathair Friel and Leroy Millar scoring twice apiece.

Coleraine required a stoppage time goal from Ian Parkhill to secure a late 2-1 win over Ballyclare Comrades.
