JON WALTERS hopes to play his way to a permanent deal at Ipswich after joining them on loan from Burnley last night.

The Republic of Ireland striker has joined the Championship’s bottom club for a second spell until January when the arrangement will be reviewed.

Walters previously played for the Tractor Boys for three years between 2007 and 2010.

He scored 32 goals in 146 league appearances before leaving for Stoke City where he made over 200 appearances.

Walters, 34, joined Burnley at the start of last season but injuries hampered his push for a role in the team having made just five appearances.

And in May, he admitted he would have to leave for regular football despite having a year to run on his contract.

Walters could make his debut in Sunday’s derby against Norwich.

“I could have gone elsewhere but I enjoyed my time here before so it was a no brainer,” he said.

“I could have stayed at Burnley and not played but that wasn’t happening. I’m still hungry to do well.

“The manager knows I haven’t come here to take it easy. He knows I want to work hard and set standards.”

Elsewhere, Irish striker Cillian Sheridan is poised to swap Poland for Russia.

The ex-celtic star has been told he can leave Jagiellonia Bialystok and a move to an unnamed Russian club is on the cards.

And Irish U21 midfielder Josh Cullen has joined Charlton on loan from West Ham.
