DAIRY NOT SCARY

Study shows cheese & glass of milk can be good for the heart Watson: I’ve lost six stone and reversed my diabetes

EATING cheese and drinking full-fat milk could improve heart health, research shows.

People who consumed three dairy portions a day had a lower risk of heart disease and stroke in a study of 130,000 volunteers.

Health chiefs advise eating two to four fat free or low fat dairy servings a day but avoiding full fat products as much as possible.

Participants in the study were put into four groups – one consumed no dairy, another had less than one serving per day, a third ate one to two servings and a fourth had more than two servings. A serving was equivalent to a glass of milk, a cup of yoghurt, a 15g slice of cheese or a teaspoon of butter. Those in the high intake group were 40% less likely to die during the nine-year study by Mcmaster University in Canada.

But the British Heart Foundation said it would not change its advice as the study type “can’t explain why higher dairy intake was linked to lower risk of death”. HERE is one political figure who is not puffed-up – the six stone lighter senior Labour MP Tom Watson.

The deputy leader today will reveal he had Type 2 diabetes but reversed it by ditching sugar and processed foods.

The 51-year-old shadow minister responsible for sport will also say he no longer needs to take medication.

He will tell the UK Active conference: “My own journey has taught me what changing your diet and getting active can do. Type 2 diabetes is reversible.”

The MP will pledge Labour will launch a commission to halt it once in power.

Sufferers in England are predicted to rise by a million to 4.9 million by 2035. Foot amputations have rocketed.
