Our front page told how Buckingham Palace had been hit during a German bombing raid. The King and Queen were unharmed and left shortly after to visit other bombed parts of the capital. Three staff were injured.

36 YEARS AGO (1982)

Former Hollywood star Princess Grace of Monaco died after the brakes on her 10-year-old Rover failed and it fell 100ft down a ravine near Monte Carlo, turning over several times.

117 YEARS AGO (1901)

Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th President of the US after predecesso­r William Mckinley died of wounds from an assassinat­ion attack. The political progressiv­e is considered one of the greatest presidents and his face is carved into Mount Rushmore alongside Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.
