PREGNANT AFTER HOLIDAY FLING?

-

Dear Coleen

I’m a 20-year-old girl and studying at university. Earlier in the summer I went on holiday and, stupidly, had a one-night stand with a handsome local guy, and he didn’t use any protection.

I’m not trying to make excuses because I know I should know better, but we’d both had quite a bit to drink.

Now I’m back at uni and terrified I’m pregnant as I’ve missed my period.

I’m so anxious, I don’t know what to do. If I’m pregnant my parents will be furious, as they’re funding my course and it’ll totally muck up my last year at uni. I can’t stop worrying.

I think you need to stop worrying about potential outcomes and find out the facts. So the first thing you need to do is a pregnancy test and if it’s positive, then speak to your doctor and discuss your options. If you are pregnant and not sure you want to keep the baby, then it’s important you deal with things soon.

There’s also the possibility you could have caught a sexually transmitted infection so, to be on the safe side, visit your local GUM (genitourinary medicine clinic) where you can get tested for STIS and they can also perform a pregnancy test.

Without wanting to burst your bubble, this Romeo could have been having sex with lots of other holidaymakers.

As for your parents, you don’t know how they’d react, but I’m sure their number-one concern would be your health and wellbeing. Find out what you’re dealing with first and then tackle the conversation with your parents if you need to. And lean on your friends for support, too.
