No errors or the Sub will sink

- BY ALAN MARSHALL

VILLARREAL boss Javier Calleja has warned his players to stop making defensive howlers ahead of their Europa League showdown with Rangers.

The Yellow Submarine have made their worst start to a season for 20 years, picking up just a point from their first three La Liga games.

Calleja has demanded an improvement ahead of Sunday’s clash with Leganes as they gear up for European battle.

Steven Gerrard’s Gers travel to El Madrigal next week for their first showdown in Group G.

And the Villarreal boss doesn’t want his defence to lay down the welcome mat after some sloppy mistakes in other games this season.

He said: “We have made far too many defensive errors. It has cost us goals and points.

“We need to forget about what has happened and believe the season has started now.

“This weekend we need to get the league season off and running then we have an important game against Rangers next week in Europe.”

Calleja has been hard at work in the international break and is confident his side will improve.

He said: “Sometimes it is normal for a team to make mistakes at the start of the season but we have been working hard in the international break to eradicate them.

“We have been built on a strong defensive structure. These mistakes have cost us but we will stop them and show what we can do this week.”
