FALLS GOLD

Put your wedge on Wentworth to score a tidy Portland profit

-

WENTWORTH FALLS (nap) can come fast and late to lift the William Hill Portland Handicap (1.50) at Doncaster.

Geoff Harker’s grey is without a victory in five outings this season, but has yet to have a race run to suit.

The six-year-old needs to be held up off a strong place before playing his hand at the last possible moment.

Things panned out that way over six furlongs here in April 2017, when Wentworth Falls hit the front in the shadow of the winning post for a half-length margin, and when he followed up at

Redcar 15 days later.

Sam James’s mount competes from a mark 2lb higher than for the latter of those successes and, with 22 runners charging down the straight, the jockey will try to keep his powder dry before pouncing strides from the line.

After blowing his rivals away in Sandown’s Group 3 Solario Stakes two weeks ago, (above) will start at cramped odds for the Group 2 Champagne Stakes (3.00) – and deservedly so.

The John Gosden juvenile heads the list for both the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby next year on the back of his four-length supremacy, and there will be some long faces if Frankie Dettori’s mount is beaten.

There is no standout candidate for the Group 2 Park Stakes (2.25), so a chance is taken on 2016 winner

David Simcock’s seven-furlong specialist under-performed when fourth to Anna Nerium in the Group 3 Supreme Stakes at Goodwood last time out.

But his third to Sir Dancealot in Group 2 tests at Glorious Goodwood (Lennox Stakes) and Newbury (Hungerford Stakes) on his previous two outings would put him in the mix.

At Chester, who has two triumphs and a neck defeat to show from three visits to the Roodee, appeals in the Listed 32Red Stand Cup (2.40).

After a good second over hurdles at Cartmel last month, is taken to make a successful return to the Flat in the Unibetsponsored handicap (2.05).
