AMIR KHAN believes Canelo Alvarez should still be banned instead of fighting Gennady Golovkin in their eagerlyanticipated Las Vegas rematch.

Canelo takes on Golovkin for the undisputed world middleweight title early tomorrow after serving a sixmonth ban for failing two drugs tests in February.

Khan, who lost to Canelo in 2016, says this is a joke and says a fighter could be killed by someone on drugs.

The former unified lightwelterweight champ suspects the Mexican has been treated leniently because he is such big box office.

“This fight shouldn’t even be happening,” said Khan (right). “They should have fined him big time and used him as an example.

“But he’s a big name in boxing, he’s the superstar now with Floyd Mayweather gone.

He’s a big Mexican, who can fight in America and on Cinco de Mayo, one of boxing’s big dates.

“You’re going into a ring to beat someone up, you can literally kill someone. If you’ve got all the drugs in your body you can kill someone. I can’t believe they let fighters go on. “People have forgotten about it. Nobody has really talked about it. We want boxing to be a good, clean sport and to be respected.” Khan feels boxing’s authorities should insist on tougher testing regimes for fighters to clean up the sport.

The Bolton fighter is tested by the international Voluntary Anti-doping Association as well as the national bodies in the US and UK, USADA and UKAD.

“I don’t think fighters are scared to get caught,” he said. “I’m on VADA, I’m on USADA and I’m on UKAD yet I rarely get tested. I am always waiting for them to come and they don’t often.

“They need to be more shrewd. Be on fighters’ a***s. They should also keep a blood passport so they can go back and see the samples.”

Khan feels Golovkin has a psychological advantage over Canelo because of the failed drugs tests, which scuppered this rematch in May.

Their first fight last September was a controversial draw and Khan is leaning towards GGG.

“GGG has taken Canelo’s best shots,” he said. “Now he’s off something then GGG will believe Canelo hasn’t got the same power so he’s going to come forward more.

“I think this could be a late stoppage for GGG.”
