Conwoman’s sick Manchester bomb insurance scam
She claims compo for daughter who doesn’t exist
A CON artist who claimed compensation for a bogus daughter she said had been injured in the Manchester bombing was jailed yesterday.
Sick Susan Pain lied about her “girl” having two major operations and being in intensive care after the blast at the Ariana Grande concert in which 22 people died.
The scam was one of a string of false claims that netted the 51-year-old crook £150,000.
Insurance worker Pain, who has no children, also invented cancer battles, pregnancies and jury duty as part of her plot.
Her seven year con was finally exposed after she claimed her “daughter” was among the 800 injured by suicide bomber Salman Abedi at the Manchester Arena gig in May last year.
Pain was a director of a firm that sold policies underwritten by AXA in charge of a section insuring medical and dental staff against costs caused by sickness, maternity, family emergencies and jury service.
But AXA was unable to find any record of her girl. It then reviewed a host of other claims by Pain, of Kirkby, Liverpool. Between March 2010 and July 2017 she made 31, all false, in the names of friends and family, plus her own name. They had no idea about the scams.
She once posed as an orthodontist who had taken leave as their daughter needed open heart surgery and the hospital was far away from their home.
In others she said family members of medics submitting the applications were suffering different types of cancer.
Pain admitted fraud. She was given a two-year sentence by a judge at Liverpool crown court.
Detective Constable Ant Andrews, who led the investigation into her crimes, said after the hearing: “Pain exploited the tragic terror attack at the MEN Arena, as well as other examples of human suffering, to make a financial gain.
“She betrayed the trust she had with her friends and family, using their details to make false claims, then lying to them so she could receive the money she’d stolen.
“She is now paying a significant price for her fraudulent activity.”
