Kernohan: It’s unreal to score
TEENAGE winger Angus Kernohan summed up his first Ulster try against the Southern Kings in one simple word: “Unbelievable”.
Kernohan, who has represented Ireland at U20 level, raced over in the corner in Sunday’s 28-7 Pro14 win in Port Elizabeth to ease the province top of Conference B.
It capped off an impressive introduction to senior rugby for the 19-year-old who made a positive impression on his full debut against the Scarlets a fortnight ago.
Kernohan, who recently signed a full Ulster Rugby Academy contract on the back a bright pre-season, said: “It was was unbelievable – it really was.
“I was some experience and great to be out there with 14 other guys who are supporting you and wanting the best for you.
“It’s been a great summer and I’ve learned so much. I’m just trying to absorb it all. When there are great leaders in the team and guys like Henry Speight, it’s easy to learn.”
Kernohan is backing Ulster to build on their winning start to the campaign against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday night.
“We’re confident we can beat anyone in this league,” he said. “We’ll put in another few days hard work and hopefully deliver again.”
Scrum-half John Cooney is an injury doubt after suffering a nasty head wound against the Kings.
Defence coach Jared Payne said: “Knowing him he’ll be pretty keen to play but we’ll see what the doctors say and make a call from there.”
