BUBBA GLOVES A NOISY START

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

WACKY Bubba Watson wore his glove in his press conference yesterday in Michael Jackson style – then revealed he is banned from whipping up the Ryder Cup crowd on the first tee.

The double Masters champion said: “Every time we have a team event, there’s people that you’ve got to say so many words or you’ve got to do something, we’ll say, dumb. So I said I’ve got to wear my glove the whole interview. So I’m doing it.”

Jordan Spieth (above) said: “I don’t know anything about it. He just was in the locker room and said, ‘I think I’m going to wear my glove in media’.”

Watson has form for saying daft things in France. At the 2011 French Open, he complained about the crowds and then said: “I saw the big tower, Eiffel Tower, an arch, I rode around in a circle, and what’s that building that starts with an L?”

At Medinah in 2012, Watson urged fans to make a noise on the first tee as he unleashed his driver. But the world No.14 (above) added: “I’ve been told I can’t get the crowd to rev up, though, as it’s an iron off the tee. I don’t want to get revved up trying to hit a bullet and fat it 20 yards down the fairway.”

Asked what he learned from being a winning vice-captain in 2016, he said: “That the team is a lot better without me as a player. I’ve never won one.”

He is among a number in the US team struggling with illness. “A lot of us were kind of getting sick,” said Watson. “It kind of started through the locker room last week.”
