DOLLAR BILLS CAN’T MATCH EURO THRILLS $10m man Rose says it’s impossible to put a price on the feeling of team glory beating the US brings

-

TEN MILLION DOLLAR man Justin Rose reckons there is no feeling like winning the Ryder Cup.

Europe’s top player also insisted the home team will have “something to prove” this week after losing the precious trophy in America in 2016.

The world No.2 has won the US Open, Olympic gold and topped the world rankings for the first time this month.

And Rose, who finished tied fourth as a teenage amateur at the 1998 Open, arrived in France after claiming the Fedex Cup on Sunday to bank the biggest prize in golf.

But the Us-based star, who partners rookie Jon Rahm in this morning’s fourballs, said: “I‘m proud of my Ryder Cup achievements in a different way. I think that being in an individual sport, you can get a little selfish in your goals but there’s nothing like winning as a team and celebrating as a team.

“That is the one thing I remember from Medinah in 2012. There was no elation I’ve felt like that. Winning as a team is incredible.

“If I were to go 5-5 again and build a pretty good points record, I am sure that would come into the equation of the things I’ve done in my career.”

Rose played a huge part in the Miracle of Medinah and was Europe’s top points scorer at Gleneagles. But the Open runner-up and his usual partner Henrik Stenson lost to Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth in the opening fourballs match two years ago to set the tone for a crushing US win.

Before Hazeltine, Europe had dominated the biennial showdown with six victories out of seven since 2002.

Yet with the Ryder Cup going to the massive Whistling Straits in 2020 to suit a young American team full of huge hitters, a first USA victory in Europe for 25 years on Sunday would threaten a new and different era of dominance.

Rose said: “Obviously Jordan and Patrick last time were very much up for beating myself and Henrik. They beat us a couple of times and we obviously only got the better of them once.

“I think Henrik and I will feel we have a bit more to prove again whereas at Hazeltine we were coming in after a great Gleneagles and maybe – I’m not saying we went in overconfident – but sometimes when you have something to prove again, you can play a little harder. And I think that is the thing for the whole Europe team right now. We are the team with something to prove again.”

Rose, who has a Ryder Cup points percentage of 71 – second only to Ian Poulter – has twice beaten Phil Mickelson in the singles and at the 2007 Wgc-match Play, and is Europe’s highest ranked player in Paris.

“I don’t think I will be a target,” he said. “I’m not really sure how the Americans view it. I am probably to Phil!”

Rose played his first Ryder Cup matches with his mate Ian Poulter in 2008 but has paired six times with Stenson in 2014 and 2016.

“I have so much trust in him,” said Rose. “You couldn’t ask for a more reliable partner than Henrik. And he has balls.”
