CIRCUS ringmaster Robert Forshaw invites you to get your freak on at the Carnival of Delights.

For one strange night, Bagenal’s Castle in Newry, Co Down, will morph into a sideshow circus on October 19. The event is the first in The Late Shift, a series of after dark happenings across Northern Ireland to encourage over 18s to try a different kind of night out at their local museum.

See facebook.com/thelateshiftni. A MAN in a wheelchair appeared in court yesterday facing charges linked to a violent incident in which a house was rammed and a shot was fired.

Two men were at Derry Magistrate’s Court following the series of public order incidents on Thursday night.

Thomas Scarlett, 39, from Ballynagard Crescent in the city, is charged with possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A detective constable told the court an initial charge of attempted murder had been withdrawn.

As a result of the same alleged incident at Ballynagard Crescent 33-year-old Simon James Whiteman, from Claremont House in Richmond Crescent, has been charged with causing criminal damage to house gates, with attempted grievous bodily injury with intent on two men and a woman and with dangerous driving.

A detective constable told District Judge Barney Mcelholm she could connect both defendants to the charges. She said Scarlett, who was in a wheelchair, had 45 previous convictions and Whiteman, who was using a crutch, had 114 previous convictions.

The officer said police initially treated the case as one of criminal damage, however, the following morning another neighbour contacted the police and reported his upstairs window had a hole in it and he had found what appeared to be a bullet head inside the room.

Bail was refused and both defendants were remanded in custody until October 25.
