WE’RE FINALLY UP AND RUNNING.. Loughgall goalscorer Hoey believes win over Limavady is the spark to ignite their season

-

02.10.2018 LOUGHGALL have suffered a slow start to the season but goalscoring midfielder Andrew Hoey believes Saturday’s victory over Limavady can be a ‘turning point’.

The former Glenavon youth player was again on the scoresheet for The Villagers as they edged out United to gain only their second league victory of the campaign.

“We see this as a turning point in the season for us,” Hoey told Match on Tuesday.

“We have not enjoyed the best of starts to the league season but we know that as soon as you start getting a run of wins together the situation changes.

“We don’t deserve to be in the situation we are in at the moment and we know our team is much better than the points tally that we currently have.

“We know we have enough talent here to be enjoying a strong season and we have the belief in ourselves that we can turn it around.

“We have games coming up against teams around us in the standings so that gives us the opportunity to build from here.”

The Mid-ulster side have been derailed by conceding late goals in early matches but Hoey insists that whilst there was frustration, nobody has panicked.

“It was only a matter of time until we started to get victories because we have been playing really well recently,” the 21-yearold added.

“We haven’t been able to see games out this season and we have been conceding a lot of late goals, so hopefully this will now give us something to build on.

“It’s been so frustrating in those games to throw away the good positions we have been in, and they have tended to come against the bigger teams in the league.

“It was a similar story against Portadown and Larne then against Ballyclare we conceded two goals late on – they were sickeners but that is what we need to learn from. “The important thing has been nobody panics but there is no reason to, we have been playing well and we just needed to keep patient.

“The boss has full faith in us to turn things around and that was the message – just to keep playing the way we are and keep things tighter at the back.” The former Armagh City star now has three goals in his last two games and is enjoying a regular run of first-team football after overcoming injury problems.

“I’m delighted with how things are going personally,” continued Hoey.

“Obviously you want to be winning matches first and foremost and worry about your goals after that but when you are grabbing important goals and helping the team to win points then you can’t complain.

“Last season I kept getting setbacks with niggly injuries that prevented me from getting a real run of games under my belt.

“I’m glad to get a good run of games now and hopefully that form can continue throughout the season to help us out.”
